“That was several minutes before the collision, which gave them lots of time to clear the boat by a half mile or more,” Tom says, shaking his head in disgust. “There were rumours that the man on watch on the Burgeo had been drinking, but I don’t know if that’s true or not and, of course, we’ll never know.”

The loss of the schooner was one thing, but Tom Hatcher is still upset about the treatment they received after the incident. Although they were just minutes away from their home in North Sydney, Captain Gullage of the Burgeo decided to continue the trip to Port aux Basques, and although the fishermen were given food and a place to sleep, they were not able to get home until two days later. And what irks Tom Hatcher most is that they lost all their provisions and, perhaps more importantly, the rest of the fishing season for no reason, and were not able to get any help.

“I checked with a lawyer in Sydney, and he told me we couldn’t sue the King’s steamship so we might just as well forget it.”

Tom Hatcher didn’t go back fishing anymore after that summer and, even though he’s retired, he still wonders what might have happened to his life if August 2, 1945 had not been the final voyage for the Ethel and Albert.
